The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater who has served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.
Responding to critical shortage of scientists and mathematicians, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics and the natural sciences and to foster excellence in those fields.
To be considered for nomination as a Goldwater Scholar, a student must:
All candidates are nominated by their college or university. They must provide biographical information about their background, interests, and plans; as well as a statement about the intent to enter an appropriate career in mathematics or the natural sciences. Specific reference as to how the student's educational plans provide preparation for that career should also be included. The nominee will submit an essay of 600 words or less which relates to the student's chosen career. The nominee will secure letters of recommendation from a faculty member in the nominee's field of study, an individual who can discuss the nominee's potential for a career in mathematics or the natural sciences, and another individual who can attest to the nominee's potential. Transcripts of the nominee's high school and college grades are required.

The Board of Trustees of the Scholarship will name up to 250 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars nationwide.
