Ithaca College's School of Health Science and Human Performance and the School of Music have been closely involved in developing many aspects of performing arts medicine.
The Healthy Musician Workshop is held annually at Ithaca College. Musicians and health care providers from around the country attend lectures and workshops concerning the human body's function and learn about the prevention and care of music-related injuries. Up to date information about this workshop is available at www.ithaca.edu/cess.
An on campus Ithaca College Occupational/Physical Therapy Clinic is involved in the daily evaluation and treatment of artists with performance related injuries. This includes both musicians and dancers. Weekly screening clinics are held in order to help direct performers to appropriate health care providers and to allow physical therapy students to develop an interest in this aspect of therapy.Weekly core strengthening classes are held in the clinic -- designed especially for musicians and dancers.
In the Ithaca College School of Music an elective course on the care and prevention of music-related injuries is taught annually.
Active research concerning topics of performance and injuries are ongoing with national presentations and publications.
There are plans being developed to provide specialization certification in performing arts physical therapy for qualified students.
